Shibden Park Interpretation Centre
Client: Calderdale Council
Contract Value: £2.5 million
Shibden Park has benefitted from a major restoration supported in part by the Heritage Lottery Fund. As part of the project, a number of the existing buildings have been refurbished and a new Interpretation Centre constructed.
The award winning Interpretation Centre has been designed to provide an adaptable venue for events, exhibitions and functions to meet the needs of the local community and encourage social interaction. The centre design also addressed practical requirements such as café and toilet facilities to increase the quality of visitors' experience. Fully glazed public areas give prime views of the park while a dry stone spine to the building emphasises local skills and materials.
The design of the centre focused upon quality and the environmental impact of the building. Sustainable design elements include a ground source heat pump, natural ventilation, solar orientation, a green roof and controls to minimise water use.
