Silsden Primary School

This design comprises a two-storey linear solution based around a central learning street, to create a school where a “non-hierarchical democratic teaching ethos could be delivered”. Working in conjunction with BMDC, the project is a new school building for 3 form entry, and enhanced facility for a 1 form entry expansion, including nursery provision and playing fields on a sloping site in Silsden.

Classrooms are organised along a light filled, double sided shared learning street/atrium, whose high roof allows for natural ventilation via the stack effect. Shallow mono-pitched roofs follow the natural gradient of the site. The project involved working closely with the client to develop the scheme, to a very tight timescale, to allow the school to open in the following academic year.
