The Atrium

  • Client: University of Bradford
  • Project type: EducationInteriors
  • Location: Bradford

The four-storey Atrium provides an important vibrant focal point for the campus.

The award-winning Atrium provides a flexible dynamic space and forms a one-stop-shop for student services, with catering and IT connection points it is successfully used as a gathering and social space as well as a stand-alone space for special events.

The architectural challenge we faced was to construct a striking, dynamic social space, on a site surrounded by three existing University buildings. Our innovative design successfully achieved this by using EFTE, an extremely light-weight, self-cleaning material, used on the iconic Eden Centre. The light-weight EFTE sits upon tapered tubular trusses, which are light enough to be supported by the three surrounding buildings, avoiding the requirements for disruptive and expensive strengthening works.

The design preserves a unique individuality promoting and representing the University of Bradford by providing a stunning first impression and is used for social and special events, open days, and graduation ceremonies.

“RBS were there when we needed them.  They were well organised, knowledgeable and proactive to ensure the project would meet the strict timescales set.”
